A

Amortization

Accounting

The process of spreading a player's transfer fee over the length of their contract for accounting purposes. A €100M player on a 5-year deal costs €20M/year on the books.

B

Broadcasting Revenue

Revenue

Income from domestic and international television rights, including both centralized league deals and individual club agreements.

Buyout Clause

Contracts

A contractual provision requiring a set payment to release a player from their contract. Common in Spanish football (cláusula de rescisión) and increasingly across Europe.

C

Capital Gain on Player Trading

Accounting

The profit a club makes when selling a player for more than their current book value (original fee minus accumulated amortization).

Commercial Revenue

Revenue

Income from sponsorship deals, merchandising, licensing, and other commercial partnerships.

D

Debt-to-Equity Ratio

Finance

A measure of a club's financial leverage, comparing total liabilities to shareholders' equity. Higher ratios indicate more debt-financed operations.

E

EBITDA

Accounting

Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization. A common measure of operational profitability in football, stripping out transfer activity.

F

FFP (Financial Fair Play)

Regulation

UEFA's framework requiring clubs to balance football-related expenditure with football-related revenue. Replaced by Financial Sustainability rules in 2022.

Loan Fee

Transfers

A payment made by the borrowing club to the parent club for the temporary transfer of a player.

M

Matchday Revenue

Revenue

Income generated from ticket sales, hospitality, and other stadium-related activities on game days.

Multi-Club Ownership (MCO)

Ownership

A model where one ownership group controls multiple clubs across different leagues, enabling player development pipelines, commercial synergies, and regulatory arbitrage. Leading examples include City Football Group (13 clubs) and RedBird Capital (AC Milan, Toulouse).

Net Transfer Spend

Transfers

The difference between a club's total transfer expenditure and income from player sales over a given period.

P

Parachute Payments

Regulation

Funds paid by the Premier League to relegated clubs for up to three seasons to ease financial transition back to the Championship. Worth approximately £48M in year one, tapering over subsequent seasons.

Player Market Value

Transfers

An estimated figure representing what a player would command on the open transfer market, based on age, performance, contract length, and market conditions.

PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules)

Regulation

The Premier League's financial regulations, replacing FFP in 2023. PSR limits clubs to maximum losses of £105M over any rolling three-season period. Clubs breaching PSR face points deductions.

S

Sell-on Clause

Contracts

A contractual provision entitling the selling club to a percentage of any future transfer fee when the player moves again.

Solidarity Payment

Transfers

Compensation paid to clubs that contributed to a player's training and development when that player makes an international transfer.

Squad Cost Ratio

Regulation

The percentage of a club's total revenue spent on player wages. UEFA's new rules cap this at 70% of relevant revenue.

Stadium Naming Rights

Revenue

A commercial agreement where a company pays to have its brand associated with a stadium's name for a specified period.

Third Party Ownership (TPO)

Regulation

A now-banned practice where external investors held economic rights to a player's transfer value. Prohibited by FIFA since 2015.

Wage Bill

Finance

The total annual cost of player salaries, bonuses, and associated employment costs at a club.
